Recycling Initiative: Day 1

Last weekend as I left LP Field, after an huge Titans win over the Bills, I grabbed a water bottle off the ground to throw away on my way out. My reasoning was that it would make the stadium cleaners’ job a little bit easier. As I walked down the corridor I triumphantly shot the Dasani bottle into the nearby trash can just like Kobe. As the bottle rained flawlessly into the receptacle I noticed the recycling bins across the walkway. Through the best of intentions I tossed a perfectly recyclable bottle into a trash can. I suppose it’s really not a big deal, but that day I decided I would try a new experiment in my life - recycling bottles!

I’ve found that a big problem with recycling, especially on a college campus, is the inconvenience. Typically, I think many students here at Lipscomb would be happy to recycle, but it just seems so inconvenient. I mean seriously, we’re a campus that hardcore promotes sustainable practice, but the only recycling cans (I can think of) on campus are on the 3rd floor of a building on the other side of campus.

Anyway, enough ranting…

In the past 4 years I’ve basically sworn off pop, soda, carbonation, etc, so I drink a lot of water. (Most of which comes in a conveniently bottled form.) Today I designated a Kroger bag in my wardrobe to hold my empty, compacted water bottles. So now instead of throwing the bottles away, I’ll be tossing them into an equally convenient bag mere feet away from my trash can. Today I’ve managed to collect 7 bottles, and the night is still young!

So for the next month, I’m going to try this whole recycling thing. If you want to join me in this recycling initiative, hit me up. I’d be more than happy to carpool to the recycling center.

For fellow students of LU, the nearest facility is the Hillsboro High School Recycling Center. For directions, click here!
