Tonight was the annual “Missions Fair” at Lipscomb University. Close to 40 teams were represented, sending trips to 6 of the 7 continents (Sorry Antarctica). Since I’m a senior, this may be my last chance to partake in a Lipscomb Mission trip. Gotta make this one count. So many choices, so little time.
During my time at Lipscomb University I’ve been part of several mission teams. Two years ago I pioneered a trip to St. Eustatius (a small Caribbean Island in the Dutch Antilles) where we worked with a school, did environmental projects, and climbed a volcano. Last year I spent my spring break in Nashville working in community gardens and helping organizations like Habitat for Humanity. Then last summer I spent 4 weeks of serving in Perth, Western Australia. After traveling for 56 hours across the globe, I had the privilege of working with Warwick Church of Christ to build relationships in the community. Each experience was priceless in its own way, but the question still remains - where will I end up this year?
Three trips really caught my eye tonight…
First, the New York City trip caught my eye from the moment I walked through the door. If I join up, I will be working with a public school in the Bronx while doing community outreach through Manhattan Church of Christ. It’s been about 6 years since I’ve been to New York City, and I think this could be a good year to to check up on her.
Next, I really see myself fitting into the mission team to Miami, Florida. Many of my friends have had great experiences with the trip as they pair up with an inner city church to minister to the community in sunny Miami. This trip fits me well because I love the idea of a small team growing closer to one another.
And then there’s the big surprise of the night… When I walked into the fair tonight, New York and Miami were both already on my radar. However, one trip really struck me as something I could really enjoy being a part of - Cozumel, Mexico. This small team (roughly 20 members) will travel to Mexico to work with a small orphanage of approximately 30 children. I don’t speak much Spanish, so that may have to change if I pursue this route. Either way, this seems like an incredible way to reach outside of my comfort zone and meet new people from another new of the world. Adventure anyone?
I have a month to make up my mind and start fund raising, so that gives me some time to work out the logistics. I know that whichever choice I make will present it’s own unique blessings. I’m very thankful to have this amazing opportunity to travel around the world to serve others. Stay tuned to follow my adventure!
